Facebook said it would block videos heavily manipulated from its website by artificial intelligence, known as deepfakes.

A company executive said in a blog post on Monday night that the social network would delete videos that had been manipulated by artificial intelligence in ways that "would potentially trick somebody into believing that a video topic said words that they did not actually say." The policy will not extend to parody or satire, nor will it refer to videos that have been edited to omit or alter the word order, said Monika Bickert.

The announcement comes ahead of a hearing on Wednesday morning before the House Energy & Commerce Committee, during which Ms. Bickert, the vice president of global policy management at Facebook, is scheduled to testify alongside other experts on "manipulation and deceit in the digital age."

Facebook announced at the end of December that it had deleted hundreds of accounts, including sites, groups and feeds for Instagram, to trick users in the U.S. and Vietnam with fake profile pictures created with the help of artificial intelligence.
