If you have a second-place product, this often means that you need to invest more to gain market share.

This is the case with Surface products from Microsoft, with Microsoft spending heavily on promoting the line compared to the much more modest iPad budget from Apple, according to the numbers of iSpot.tv.

The research company announced that Microsoft has invested an additional $219.1 million on television surface advertising, a rise of 18.76 percent year-over-year. This is more than four times the ad spent by Apple on the iPad, amounting to $49.1 million in TV ads.

Also, Microsoft tried much harder to release 23 ad spots that played more than 15,000 times, generating 9.06 billion impressions.

For the year, Apple ran only 3 advertisements, one in January's English only and one in November's English and Spanish, creating a total of 1.18 billion impressions.

In 2019, Apple generated more than $21 billion in iPad revenue, while surface revenue is likely to be less than 1/4.
